Two Ways to See Veins:

Near-Infrared vs Transillumination

Hellovein provides more flexibility with multiple imaging colors, adjustable brightness, and variable image sizes. HELLOVEIN and AccuVein use near-infrared (NIR) technology, while Veinlite relies on traditional transillumination. Next, we’ll briefly compare how these two technologies differ.

Principle
Rectangle-18049

Near-Infrared, NIR

Near-infrared vein imaging uses light with a wavelength of 700–900 nm; hemoglobin absorbs it more strongly, causing veins to appear as darker shadows in the image and thus become visible.

Rectangle-18049-1

Transillumination

Transillumination uses visible light to pass through tissue, making superficial veins appear as dark silhouettes because the light is scattered and absorbed differently by blood and surrounding tissue.

Visible Vein Depth

Deeper superficial veins (approximately 5–10 mm+ depth)

Very superficial veins (approximately 2–5 mm depth)

In-Use Video Demonstration
Image Quality

High contrast, clear vein outline

Moderate contrast, vein outline not very clear

Usage Environment

Can be used in various lighting conditions

Best in relatively dim light

Operation & Efficiency

Veins display immediately on power-on; can use stand
or cart, hands-free operation, higher efficiency

Handheld, need to adjust angle slowly to locate veins

Ideal Patients

Almost all patients: adults, children, elderly, overweight, and difficult veins

Infants, thin skin, elderly

While vein lights are very useful, they are not perfect. They can be affected by things like body hair and tattoos. Body hair can interfere with the visualization of veins. The ink pigments used in tattoos can block infrared absorption, meaning the vein finder might not accurately map the veins in that area. Some scars can make it harder for vein finders to map the veins accurately under the skin. While shallow or minor scars aren't usually a problem, very thick scar tissue (like from burns) can make veins harder to detect. Sometimes, scars with deep pigmentation can also make it difficult for vein light finder to work properly.
